Background:

This quarter's Better Connections report looks at Australian attitudes towards mail and email.

Data from the Australia Post Consumer Survey was used to examine the viewpoints of 2,000 Australians in terms of readership of mail and preferences for receiving different types of messages.

In the report:

  • The average Australian recalls receiving 7.0 pieces of personally addressed mail and 10.7 pieces of unaddressed mail in one week.
  • 85% of Australians check their mail daily and 86% read their mail on the same day they receive it.
  • Australians receive the most personally addressed mail from financial institutions, utilities companies and charities.
  • Australians are most likely to read personally addressed mail from financial institutions, utilities companies and clubs or interest groups.
  • People's preferences for physical mail versus email haven't changed significantly since November 2013; there is no indication of a shift to digital channels or vice versa.
