Are you eligible for a passport renewal?

You can renew your passport using a streamlined renewal form if you:

  • are an Australian citizen
  • are aged 18 years or over, and
  • can present your most recent Australian passport that:
    • was issued when you were aged 16 years or over
    • was valid for at least two years when issued
    • is current or expired less than three years ago, and
    • was issued in your current name, date and place of birth and sex
    • has not been previously reported as lost or stolen
    • is not an emergency passport

Make sure you don't need to apply for a new passport

It's a good idea to check to see if you need to apply for a new passport, even if you've already done it before. You'll need to apply for a new passport if you're:

  • applying for your first passport
  • under 18 years old, and have never been married

OR if your previous passport:

  • was lost, stolen or seriously damaged
  • can't be presented
  • was valid for less than two years
  • expired more than three years ago, or
  • has personal details that have now changed (e.g. name, date and place of birth, sex)

Remember, you need to be an Australian citizen to apply or renew your passport through Australia Post.
