Buying your Money Order

Our step-by-step guide shows you how to buy your Money Order.

Payment methods

When you pay for your Money Order, we'll add the relevant fee (detailed in the table above) to the value of your Money Order.

We accept cash or EFTPOS (cheque or savings accounts only) as payment for Standard or Express Money Order at participating Post Offices.

Please note: Credit card or cheques are not acceptable forms of payment for Money Orders.

It's quick and easy to collect payment for a Money Order.

In most cases, you'll have three options for collecting your money:

• Cash over the counter - cash a Money Order instantly at a participating Post Office
• Bank@Post¹ deposit - deposit the money into your bank account at a Post Office offering the Bank@Post service
• Bank deposit - deposit the money into your account at a bank² in Australia

Your options for collecting payment depend on what type of Money Order you're redeeming and whether the nominated payee is an individual or a business.

Please note that if the nominated payee is a business or organisation, you'll need to deposit the Money Order amount into an account at your bank or financial institution.

Redeeming a Standard Money Order

Follow these steps to collect your money:

1. Make sure you have valid identification to prove you're the nominated payee
2. Visit a participating post office or bank in Australia
3. Choose your preferred payment option - cash over the counter, Bank@Post deposit or bank deposit

Redeeming an Express Money Order

Express Money Orders are sent by fax from one participating post office to another, making this service an ideal way to send money in a hurry.

If someone informs you that they're sending you an Express Money Order, they should also let you know when - and to where - it will be delivered.

Follow these steps to collect your money:

1. Make sure you have valid identification to prove you're the nominated payee.
2. Visit the relevant post office, as notified by the sender.
3. Present your identification at the counter.
4. Tell us whether you'd like to cash the Money Order or make a Bank@Post deposit.

Redeeming a Money Order on behalf of someone else

If you're not the nominated payee but would like to redeem a Money Order on their behalf, you'll need to produce a written authority to receive payment.

The authority must include:

• the name and address of the person authorised to receive the payment
• a specimen signature of the authorised person
• the date on which the authority was given
• the name, address and signature of the payee
• the name, address and signature of a witness. The witness must not be the person being authorised to receive the payment.

Standard and Express Money Orders can be cashed at any Post Office that sells Money Orders.

However, if you want to deposit the Money Order amount into your bank account, you will need to collect payment at a Post Office displaying the Bank@Post logo.
