Applying for a Tax File Number (TFN)
If you're an Australian resident, you can apply for a TFN online.
Note: This application process is for Australian residents only. If you're a permanent migrant, temporary visitor or living outside Australia, visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website for information on how to apply.
How to apply in 3 steps
Step 1
Complete the online TFN application on the ATO website.
Step 2
Print your application summary and gather the required identity documents.
Step 3
Visit a participating Post Office with your documents, within 30 days of submitting your online application.
After you apply
You should receive your TFN within 28 days of visiting the Post Office. The ATO will send your TFN to the postal address provided in your application.
Please wait until the 28-day processing period has passed before submitting another application.
