What’s it all about? Beautiful jewellery and accessories, candles, homewares and soft toys. As SisterWorks says, their products are ‘handmade with love’ in Melbourne. Oh, and everything is crafted by women.
Anything else we should know? Well, the women who make the products aren’t just anyone—they’re new migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. So the whole operation is not-for-profit to give these women a leg up in starting their own business… SisterWorks gives them financial independence and helps them settle into Australian life.
So how did it all come to be? Basically through a belief that work empowers women… and because of language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of skills and networks immigrant women are among the most vulnerable in the country. With a little support, it doesn’t have to be that way.
