Post Office Boxes & bags

Post Office Boxes & bags

A handy way to receive deliveries, keep them safe, and collect them when you want*.

5 reasons why you need a PO Box

  • Protect your privacy by not revealing your street address
  • Keep the same address, even when you move
  • Free 6-month mail redirection for new leases**

  • Access your mail 24/7, whenever it suits you*

  • Avoid mail piling up in your letterbox if you're away
Did you know? You can use your PO Box for parcel deliveries too. If your parcel's too big, we'll keep it safe and let you know where you can collect it.

Choose the type of PO Box that's right for you

You can apply for selected new leases online, or search for a Post Office Box location near you and go in-store. Just pick the type of box or bag you want from the list below:

PO Box

Most popular solution for general personal or business use. You can apply online for personal use only.

Your business can get a single GPO Box address, or the same box number in each capital city.

Locked Bag

If your business gets a lot of mail, or you run competitions or promotions, a Locked Bag is for you. Apply in-store only.

Private Bag

Best way to manage your mail if you live in a rural or remote area. Apply in-store only.

Pricing of a PO box or bag

You can lease a box or bag for up to 1 year in-store and 5 years online, and keep renewing it annually if you want to. Our pro rata pricing runs from 1 April until 31 March the following year.

For new leases, you'll pay an establishment fee, and what's left of the annual pro rata price, depending on what month you take out your lease. The pro rata charge for each month is one twelfth of the annual fee.

Any lease that starts in February or March will include charges for a full year in addition to pro rata fees.

Get a $5 discount on your annual lease when you pay your renewal on time (31 March each year). Your discount will be automatically applied to your invoice.

How GPO Boxes for businesses work

A General Post Office (GPO) is the main Post Office in capital cities across Australia. If you run a business, there are 2 GPO Box address options available for use:

  • A single address at one GPO location
  • A single address for all GPO locations (known as an “In Your Capital City” service or a common box)

"In Your Capital City" addresses come complete with a GPO Box in each state and territory. You pay one renewal amount, whether you want to use the address in all 8 GPO locations across the country, or just a few.

Once your application is approved, you'll get a GPO Box number between 9800 and 9999. This becomes your new address in each state. Your customers address their mail to your GPO Box number in their own capital city.

ID you'll need to show us

To take out a Post Office Box or Private Bag lease, here's the ID you'll need to provide us:

Online applications

Personal mail only: you can use your driver's licence, Australian passport, or Australian visa (foreign passport).

Post Office applications

Personal mail: proof of identity that shows your name, residential address and signature (this can be your driver's licence or 2 other documents, such as a utility bill and bank statement).

Business mail: bring the above ID, as well as proof that you are authorised to act on behalf of the business. Either a statutory declaration, copy of the Australian Business Registration document, or a signed request by an authorised officer of the business on a company letterhead.

Let us check if you have mail

Save yourself the trip, receive an email when there’s mail in your PO Box.

Apply in-person at a Post Office, or simply log into your MyPost account (or create one for free). You'll find the PO Box section under Deliveries > Delivery addresses.

Renewing your box or bag

You'll get an invoice in February each year, asking if you want to renew your box for another year. If you pay your bill by 31 March, you'll get a $5 discount.

Alternatively, you can extend your lease for up to 5 years in advance, either in-store or online at any time.

Your Post Office Box will remain yours unless:

  • you tell us that you'd like to cancel it
  • you don't pay your renewal fee by the due date
  • we cancel your service because you breach our Terms & Conditions

How to pay your renewal

  • In-person at a Post Office
  • Online through either:
    • Post Billpay from early Feb until 30 April (you'll need a credit card or Paypal account). Please note: online payments are made through Post Billpay using biller code 0060. Renewals cannot be paid through BPAY.
    • MyPost from early Feb until 30 April (you'll need a credit card)
  • Over the phone on 13 18 16 from 10 February until 30 April (you'll need a credit card)
  • By mail with a cheque or credit card
  • With your Australia Post charge account. We can automatically debit your annual renewal amount each February. Speak to your credit representative listed on your monthly account statement if you would like us to do this.

Too big to fit in your Post Office Box?

You'll get an email/SMS, or notification card in your PO Box if you've got a parcel that's too big to fit. Just show it at the collection area to pick up your item.

In some cases, we'll leave a key in your box, and you can get your item from a nearby Parcel Locker, where available, for free. Terms & Conditions apply.

Here's a list of the Post Offices where we can do this for you:

More ways to Collect@Post

  • * Please check at your individual PO Box location, as access times can vary.
  • ** Free 6-month mail redirection for new leases from your street address to your new PO Box (not from one PO Box to another PO Box). Lodge your mail redirection application in store when you collect your new PO Box keys.
  • *** Specified pricing for CBD locations, or PO Box locations in high demand, applies to PO Box services in Canberra, Hobart and Darwin GPOs and certain Post Offices as determined by Australia Post.
  • ^The Reduced Rate applies where the frequency of mail delivery by Australia Post to that customer's address (residential or business) is once per week or less. The Reduced Rate will not apply where that customer (a) resides on a houseboat or other water vessel, or (b) where the customer's address (residential or business) is located on a private road (such as a caravan park, gated community, retirement village or defence force barracks etc).
  • Note: Concession card holders aren't eligible for a reduced rate Post Office Box unless their address is in an area that we only deliver to once a week or less.
