Are you eligible for a passport renewal?

You can renew your passport using a streamlined renewal form if you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • aged 18 years or over, and
  • can present your most recent Australian passport that:
    • was issued when you were aged 16 years or over
    • was valid for at least two years when issued
    • is current or expired less than three years ago, and
    • was issued in your current name, date and place of birth and sex

You must apply for a new passport if you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • under 18 years old (and never married), or
  • applying for your first passport, or your previous passport:
    • cannot be presented
    • was lost, stolen or seriously damaged
    • was valid for less than two years
    • expired more than three years ago, or
    • has personal details that have now changed (name, date and place of birth, sex)
You will need to apply for a new passport using a full application form if any of the above points apply.

Do you need to make an appointment?

To renew your passport, you'll need to attend an interview at a participating Post Office.

In most cases you won't need to make an interview appointment for a passport renewal. However, some smaller Post Offices may have limited staffing resources to conduct your interview.

You can use our locations and hours tool to find a Post Office near you that conducts passport interviews and make an appointment.
