This year marks 75 years since the signing of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and a significant milestone of Australia welcoming over one million refugees since the end of World War II.
On Saturday at Government House, Josh Bannister, Siobhan McKenna and I were honoured to join Their Excellencies the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Mr Simeon Beckett, alongside UNHCR and the Refugee Council of Australia, to mark World Refugee Day and officially launch Australia Post’s latest stamp, “A million stories, one shared future”.
Each year, Australia Post releases a small number of commemorative stamps to recognise moments and communities that have shaped our nation. This stamp, designed in collaboration with UNHCR and the Refugee Council of Australia, reflects both a significant milestone and the ongoing contribution of people from refugee backgrounds.
The design brings together many individual journeys to form the shape of Australia. Each dot represents a unique story, while together they reflect our shared future.
At Australia Post, we have the privilege of serving communities right across the country and that gives us an important role in creating opportunities for others. Through our Refugee Action and Engagement Plan, we are supporting greater inclusion and employment pathways and remain committed to working with our partners and suppliers to go further.
