Dorothea Mackellar OBE (1885-1968) was an Australian writer known for her nationalistic poems celebrating the Australian bush and landscape. She was a member of the generation of Australian-born "bush poets" such as Banjo Paterson, CJ Denis and Henry Lawson, who saw beauty in a country that was a far cry from Mother England's "green and pleasant land". Mackellar was born at Point Piper, Sydney to a well-to-do family, who provided her with the independent means to be a writer. While city-based, much of her inspiration came from her brother's farm at Gunnedah in northern New South Wales.
The poem, "The Colours of Light" was published in 1914 in The Witch-Maid & Other Verses. The poem rejoices not in England, where "all the colours are low in pitch", but in the intense light and hues of Australia, "pitched in a higher key", from golden wattle to cobalt skies and azure mist. Mackellar's most famous poem, "My Country", was first published in 1908 in the London Spectator under the tile "Core of My Heart", when the author was only 19. Taught to generations of Australian school children, this poem declares the author's love not for England, but for a land of extremes, a brown and pitiless country "of droughts and flooding rains". The poem "Dawn" was first published in The Closed Door, and Other Verse in 1911. It recalls the author's reverie "on the road to Gunnedah" at dawn, "when all the world is made anew".
This cover is limited to 500 and includes a complete set of the 3 x 2025 50c AlBr Dorothea Mackellar uncirculated coins, struck by the Royal Australian Mint. The cover also features a unique MyStamp minisheet.
