For more than a century, BirdLife Australia, founded as the Australasian Ornithologists Union in 1901, has been a leader in bird conservation. As Australia’s largest bird conservation organisation, it focuses on advancing science, raising awareness about avifauna, and implementing programs to safeguard birds and their habitats. Among its initiatives, the annual bird count during National Bird Week stands out. Embraced by bird enthusiasts across the nation, this citizen science activity gathers crucial data on bird diversity and distribution. The results reveal trends in species populations. Recent findings show that brash, bold species favour urban areas, while smaller ones like the Willie Wagtail face decline. In 2022, more than four million birds were tallied from 124,430 checklists. Rainbow Lorikeets, Noisy Miners, and Australian Magpies dominated nation-wide. The Aussie Bird Count methodology involves timing, observing, and recording. Anyone can participate using the app or website, noting bird species and counts during a 20-minute observation. The tenth annual Aussie Bird Count, held 16–22 October, marked a decade of citizen scientists joining forces. A limited collection of 150 units celebrates this milestone, featuring four covers with embroidered badges, all presented in a special folder.
