The first day cover is a pictorial envelope with gummed stamps from the Endangered Birds stamp issue affixed and postmarked. The first day cover is valid for postage only on the day of issue, from the post office named on the postmark.
Since European colonisation, around 29 Australian bird species and subspecies have become extinct. It's also estimated that one in six species are currently under threat. This issue features bird species classified nationally as endangered or critically endangered under the EPBC (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation) Act. They include Carnaby's Black Cockatoo, the tiny Mallee Emu-wren and the lively Capricorn Yellow Chat. All illustrations are by award-winning watercolour artist Frances McMahon.
