Prior to Federation in 1901, Australia comprised six self-governing colonies: New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. Growing calls in the late 19th century for the colonies to unite culminated in a series of referendums, which eventually passed in all six colonies. The Commonwealth of Australia was inaugurated on 1 January 1901, and the first Parliament was opened in Melbourne four months later. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of Federation in 2026, the Royal Australian Mint presents a range of beautifully designed uncirculated coins. Each colony that became a state of Australia in 1901 is commemorated on a 25-cent coin, which features the state’s distinctive faunal and floral emblems. There is also a one-dollar coin representing the Commonwealth of Australia. The coins are available primarily as a seven-coin collection, packed in a themed presentation tin, but small numbers of each coin are also available individually. Mark the quasquicentennial of Federation with these striking coins.
