2025 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag being officially proclaimed as a Flag of Australia. Designed by the late Bernard Namok in 1992, the flag holds deep cultural and historical significance for Torres Strait Islander people. Its elements reflect their identity: green for land, blue for sea and black for people. While the traditional Dhari headdress and the five-pointed star at the centre of the flag symbolise cultural heritage and the island groups. Officially recognised in 1995, the flag has become a powerful symbol of pride, unity and resilience.
