The classic game board comprises 40 spaces representing 28 properties, which include colour-coded streets, railroads and utilities. In addition, there are Chance and Community Chest spaces, Luxury Tax and Income Tax spaces and the Go to Jail space. Players move around the board with distinctive tokens. These have changed over the years; some, such as the horse and rider and the iron, have been retired and new tokens introduced, including the current T-Rex and penguin.
Monopoly was first issued by American company Parker Brothers in 1935 and is now published by Hasbro. Today, there are hundreds of different editions and spin-offs and the game has been licensed in more than 103 countries and printed in more than 37 languages. Monopoly has entered contemporary popular culture, the source of expressions such as “get out of jail free card” and “go to jail, go directly to jail”. The original graphics by FO Alexander are also a universally recognisable element of the game. So, release your inner capitalist and join the Monopoly fun!
