Overview

You can renew your Australian passport at more than 1,700 participating Post Offices. We'll help ensure your passport application meets Australian Government requirements.

Are you eligible for a passport renewal?

You can renew your passport using a streamlined renewal form if you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • aged 18 years or over, and
  • can present your most recent Australian passport that:
    • was issued when you were aged 16 years or over
    • was valid for at least two years when issued
    • is current or expired less than three years ago, and
    • was issued in your current name, date and place of birth and sex

You must apply for a new passport if you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • under 18 years old (and never married), or
  • applying for your first passport, or your previous passport:
    • cannot be presented
    • was lost, stolen or seriously damaged
    • was valid for less than two years
    • expired more than three years ago, or
    • has personal details that have now changed (name, date and place of birth, sex)
You will need to apply for a new passport using a full application form if any of the above points apply.

Do you need to make an appointment?

To renew your passport, you'll need to attend an interview at a participating Post Office.

In most cases you won't need to make an interview appointment for a passport renewal. However, some smaller Post Offices may have limited staffing resources to conduct your interview.

You can complete the passport renewal form online through the Australian Passport Office.

You will then need to print a copy and bring it with you to your passport interview, along with your most recently issued passport and 2 identical photographs that meet the Australian Passport Office's photograph guidelines.

If you prefer, the Australian Passport Office can mail you a hard copy of the renewal form. Phone the Australian Passport Information Service on 13 12 32 to request this.

Please note: Passport renewal forms are not available from Australia Post.

At your interview, we'll check your documentation is correct and confirm your identity before sending your application to the Australian Passport Office. The interview should take about 5 minutes.

We can also take your photo at this time.

During your interview, you'll also need to pay your passport application fees.

What to bring to your interview: 

  • Completed 'Passport Renewal Application form' (use black ink if completing by hand)
  • Current passport
  • Two identical colour ID photographs that meet the Australian Passport Office's photograph guidelines 
  • Payment for your passport application fee 

Passport renewal fees

Pricing

When you attend your passport interview and once your application has been accepted, you'll need to pay your passport application fee. We accept payments by cash, MasterCard or Visa, or EFTPOS.

Passport fees are set by the Australian Passport Office and are subject to change.
