“A bear of very little brain”
Pooh Bear is fast approaching his centenary. Created by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard, this endearing literary bear is the star of Winnie-the-Pooh, first published 95 years ago, in 1926, and its sequel House at Pooh Corner (1928). The bear that was to become Winnie-the-Pooh, or simply Pooh, made two brief appearances before these collections of stories. Based on the teddy bear belonging to Christopher Robin, the author’s son, Pooh first appeared as Edward Bear in a poem that Milne penned for Punch magazine in 1924, republished that year in Milne’s When We Were Very Young.
Some may think the poet bear a little slow, but he is a good-natured, reliable, kind and sociable bear – as fond of his friends, particularly Christopher Robin and Piglet, as he is of honey. Set in an imaginary forest not unlike Ashdown Forest, near Milne’s country property, the stories of Pooh’s adventures have a simple yet insightful quality, which speak to an innocence and resourcefulness of children. These classic stories have provided comforting reading for generations of children.
Recognising Pooh Bear’s charm and appeal, Disney has created numerous short and feature-length films since 1966, which have been a hit with young viewers. The films have confirmed the continuing popularity of this wee British bear, first brought to life on the page by A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard.
