In 1979, film producer George Lucas set up Lucasfilm’s Computer Division, with the intention of developing cutting-edge computer technology for use in film production. In 1986, Steve Jobs purchased the Computer Division and established the group as an independent company, Pixar. Pixar and Disney began collaborating to produce computer-animated, award-winning short films as well as television commercials.
Fast forward to 1995, when the world’s first computer-animated feature film, Toy Story, is created and released in theatres on 22 November. Toy Story charts the adventures of a group of much-loved toys, which are owned by a boy named Andy. The toys, who come to life when humans aren’t around, are fearful that they are about to be replaced by Andy’s upcoming birthday presents. Andy’s favourite toy has always been Woody, a cowboy Sheriff and the group’s leader, so Woody coordinates the effort to spy on the birthday party and report back. The toys, including Mr Potato Head, Bo Beep, Hamm the pig and Rex the dinosaur, are relieved to find that they have not been replaced. Woody, on the other hand, feels threatened by Andy’s latest gift, a Buzz Lightyear action figure. As Woody‘s jealousy intensifies, friendships between the group are tested, and mayhem ensues. In the end, Woody and Buzz realise that not only are they friends, they are also a great team.
Toy Story opened at number 1 in the USA and was a world-wide smash hit, spawning three popular sequels. The movie earned several Academy Award nominations and a special achievement Oscar for its director. For 25 years, Disney Pixar has remained at the forefront of computer-animated feature film production, creating family-friendly movies with diverse characters and settings, and with positive messages at their heart.
