Revered by many as the game’s greatest, the genius known around the rugby league world as “JT” was a ball-handling wizard with an unsurpassed drive to succeed. His 323 NRL games were arguably highlighted when the golden point winner sealed his beloved Cowboys the 2015 premiership and the Clive Churchill Medal. There were countless high points on the way to a record four Dally M medals, the NRL’s highest individual honour. Thurston also poured his heart and soul into annual matches for the Indigenous All-Stars and in 38 matches representing Australia, scoring a record number of points and goals. But if it’s possible to go to yet another level for a record three-time Golden Boot winner as the world’s best player, JT did just that every time he pulled on the Queensland’s Maroons Origin jersey. He played a record 36 of his 37 games in succession and was five times player of the match as the Maroons’ won 11 series during his Origin career. His 220 career points also is an Origin record.
