Operation Ivanhoe was launched on 19 September 1971. Intelligence reports, from early September 1971, indicated that the infamous 33rd Regiment of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) was moving into the northern part of Phuoc Tuy Province. This posed a sudden threat to Australian forces, especially as it had already been determined that South Vietnamese forces could no longer maintain adequate security. On 21 September 1971, just weeks away from going home, soldiers of B and D Companies, 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion, together with artillery and aircraft support, became involved in heavy fighting against the 33rd Regiment, successfully preventing the NVA from moving further south. This important action became known as the Battle of Nui Le. It was Australia’s last major battle of the Vietnam War. Five soldiers were killed and 30 wounded. Several servicemen received awards for bravery.
