Ballaarat is the oldest surviving Australian-built steam locomotive and the first steam locomotive to operate in Western Australia. Built in 1871 in Ballarat (then “Ballaarat”), Victoria, commissioned by the WA Timber Company, it hauled timber around the Wonnerup area until 1888. In 1925, Ballaarat was donated to the Municipality of Busselton, which offered it to the WA Museum, Perth. Considered too expensive to restore, it was stored at Midland Junction. In 1929, after a coat of paint, Ballaarat featured in the state’s centenary parade. Around 1934, community members and councillors lobbied the Commissioner for Railways to return the engine to Busselton. It arrived back in 1937 and was placed in a park, where children clambered over it for decades. Between 2012 and 2017, Ballaarat was lovingly restored by community volunteers. It sits proudly on display at Railway House in the Busselton Jetty Precinct.
