The Penrith Panthers have beaten the South Sydney Rabbitohs 14–12 to become the 2021 NRL Premiers, avenging last year’s loss to the Melbourne Storm and winning their first premiership since 2003.

On Sunday 3 October 2021, with Covid-19 restrictions limiting crowd capacity to 75 per cent, 39,322 fans attended the big game at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium – the first time the grand final has been played outside Sydney. The Panthers’ co-captain Nathan Cleary shone, successfully converting two tries, scoring a penalty goal and leading a dominant and sustained Panthers’ attack from halfback. For his efforts, and despite carrying a shoulder injury, Cleary took home the Clive Churchill Medal for best on the ground (presented by his coach and premiership-winning father, Ivan Cleary).

From Matt Burton’s opening score to Stephen Crichton’s brilliant intercept try that broke the eight-all tie at the 27-minute mark of the second half, this was an electrifying and physical game, where the Panthers dominated possession, despite a few frustrating errors. The Rabbitohs also had shining moments, including Cody Walker bursting through the pack to score a memorable try midway through the first half and Cameron Murray’s tackling dominance, but a missed Rabbitohs’ field goal late in the game sealed a thrilling victory for the Panthers – a team that after two seasons at the top of its game has finally reaped the ultimate reward.
