History was made on the 25th of September at Perth’s Optus Stadium, when the Melbourne Football Club decisively powered its way to its first Premiership in 57 long years against the Western Bulldogs. This was the first time the Grand Final has been played in Perth, and only the second time it has been played outside of Victoria, but this did not deter the jubilant fans in the more then 61,00-strong crowd, many of whom were not even born the last time the Mighty Demons claimed the coveted flag in 1964. The Melbourne Football Club and Western Bulldogs were often neck-and-neck in the first two thrilling quarters – Melbourne started confidently, only to be overcome in a mid-game domination by the Bulldogs, in no small part due to Marcus Bontempelli’s three goals. But then in the final 45 minutes the tide turned, with Melbourne annihilating the Western Bulldogs, scoring 16 of the final 17 goals in a victorious final result of 21.14.140 to 10.6.66. Superstar Demons midfielder Christian Petracca kicked two outstanding goals and with his 39 disposals won his first Norm Smith Medal. Congratulations to the Melbourne Football club, on its first premiership in 57 years!
