Why does my client need a verification of identity (VOI) check?

An identity check helps reduce the risk of fraud by requiring a person to verify their identity as a buyer or seller, and to assist with establishing their authority to buy or sell the nominated land or property.

Selected Australian states have introduced verification of identity legislation for property and land purchase, sale and transfers.

This legislation places responsibility on you as a conveyancing practitioner, lawyer or mortgagee to verify the identity of your clients (the people buying, selling or transferring property).

How can Australia Post help with VOI checks?

Register for our ‘do-it-yourself’ VOI online tool, which allows you to conduct identity checks of your clients, securely record their identity documentation and receive a verification of identity report. Your client must be physically present when you’re verifying their identity with this VOI tool.

Registration also gives you access to our in-person VOI service which allows your clients to verify their identity at more than 1,500 participating Post Offices nationwide. Once the identity check is completed, we’ll send you an electronic confirmation and a verification of identity report for each check.

  • In-person identity verification at over 1,500 participating Post Offices. Appointments are not required for identity checks

How your clients should present a VOI application at Australia Post

  1. Provide your client with a Land Title Verification of Identity Form generated via the Property VOI portal.
  2. Ensure your client has the correct combination of identity documents for the highest possible category.
  3. Have your client complete the Land Title Verification of Identity Form (and where applicable, your Client Authorisation Form) Ensure they do not sign or date the form. Their signature(s) must be witnessed by an Australia Post Identity Verifier.
  4. Have your client present the completed Verification of Identity Form (and where applicable, your Client Authorisation Form) and the correct identity documents at a participating Post Office. Find the closest participating Post Office or call 13 POST (13 76 78).
(An appointment is not required for the identity check.)
