Supporting Indigenous Australians

Australia Post acknowledges the traditional owners of this land, their ancestors and elders Traditional Owner's Acknowledgement (pdf, 134kb). We are committed to reconciliation with Indigenous Australians through sustainable employment, being part of Indigenous communities and recognising the First Australians. See our Reconciliation Action Plan.

Australia Post has had an Indigenous Employment Strategy in place since 1988. Since that time, Australia Post has had six consecutive Indigenous Employment Strategies. The current strategy (2008-2011) aims to extend on the objectives of the previous strategies: that is, to provide real jobs and real opportunities to Indigenous Australians and to have our overall workforce represent the community that we serve.

At 30 June 2008, Australia Post had 616 Indigenous employees or 1.7% of our workforce. During our 21 year commitment, Australia Post has employed over 4,000 Indigenous Australians. These achievements have occurred without quotas, only one position specifically nominated for Indigenous employment and, from 1998 to 2008, a program that was fully self funded by Australia Post.

Australia Post offers Indigenous people an opportunity to gain training and experience in a variety of employment positions. You can find more information on these positions by viewing our brochure Careers for Indigenous Australians (pdf, 77kb).

Australia Post's Indigenous employees work in all types of jobs from posties to van and truck drivers, mail processing and in administration and retail jobs. Our Indigenous employees work at all levels in our business, so joining Australia Post is not just about getting a job, it's about starting a career.

Australia Post has Indigenous Employment Consultants (IECs) across Australia who manage our Indigenous Employment Strategy and who themselves are Indigenous. One of the IECs major roles is to assist Indigenous candidates in their search for employment at Australia Post and to provide our Indigenous employees with support and advice once they are employed in Australia Post.

If you are Indigenous and would like to consider applying for a job with us, email our Indigenous Employment Consultant in your State for more information about employment opportunities with Australia Post, or write to us at:
