Witnessing documents

Australia Post provides 2 witnessing services:

  • we can witness a signature on a document for you
  • we can certify a photocopy is a true copy of an original document.

We also offer 100-point ID checks and identity verification as a separate service.

Witnessing your signature

Some organisations require that your signature be witnessed by a specific person at the time you sign their documentation. For example, when completing a citizenship form a witness is required. Depending on the specific requirements of individual organisations, we may be able to witness a signature on a document for you.*

How to have a signature witnessed at Australia Post

  • First check with the organisation requiring the witnessed signature that Australia Post retail outlet staff are eligible to witness your signature on the particular document.
  • Then simply bring your document to the counter of any Australia Post retail outlet and sign it in the presence of an Australia Post staff member. The staff member will counter-sign your document on the spot to confirm that they witnessed you sign the document.

Please note that depending on the nature of the request, an Australia Post staff member has the right to decline being a witness at their discretion.

Certifying documents

In many cases, Australia Post retail outlet staff can certify documents as being true copies of the original document. Whether we can certify your document depends on the individual organisation and its specific criteria for who is eligible to certify true copies of its documents.

How to have a document certified at Australia Post

  • First check with the organisation requiring your certified true copy that Australia Post retail outlet counter staff are eligible to certify the particular documents you require.
  • Then bring your original document to any Australia Post retail outlet. The counter operator will take a photocopy and sign the document to certify that it is a true copy of the original.

Fees for witnessing signatures and certifying documents

A fee of $3.95 is charged for each signature that we witness or document that we certify as being a true copy of the original. There is no fee for this service if you present one of the following valid government-issued concession cards:

  • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card (PCC)
