  • Secure - with a range of built-in security features, Money Orders are an ideal way to send cash through the mail safely. You receive a record of your payment, and your Money Order can only be banked or cashed by the recipient.
  • Flexible - you can buy Australia Post Money Orders for any value up to $5000.

Ways to use Australia Post Money Orders

Australia Post Money Orders are ideal to use for a wide range of payments:

  • paying rental bonds
  • sending money as a gift
  • paying for online purchases when you don't want to use a credit card
  • making donations to charity

How to buy an Australia Post Money Order

You can buy Australia Post Money Orders at more than 3800 Australia Post retail outlets around the country. Post Office Locator can help you find one near you. Or you can call 13 POST (13 7678).

Simply visit any participating outlet and tell us:

  • how much you'd like your Money Order made out to
  • the name of your recipient.

You can buy a Money Order for any value you choose up to $5000. The costs are:

 Value  Fee
 Money Orders up to $1000  $4.75
 Money Orders over $1000 to $5000 (requires customer ID)  $6.30

You can pay for your Money Order using:

  • cash
  • EFTPOS (cheque or savings accounts only).

Please note you can't use a credit card or cheque to pay for Money Orders.

Once you've paid, we'll print your Money Order while you wait and give you a receipt of your payment for your records.

Express Money Orders

If you need to send cash to someone quickly and securely, our Express Money Orders are ideal. You can transfer up to $10000 across Australia within the house hour, from one participating Australia Post retail outlet to another2.

Our Express Money Order service can be very useful if you need to:

  • send emergency funds to cover unexpected expenses
  • make cash payments to staff in remote towns
  • secure urgent or pre-delivery payments from customers.

Express Money Orders cost $20.00. This includes transmitting your funds to the participating Australia Post retail outlet that you'd like your recipient to collect their payment from.

To organise an Express Money Order, visit any participating outlet and tell us:

  • the outlet you would like to send your Money Order to
  • the person who the Express Money Order is for.

Once you've organised your Express Money Order, contact your recipient to inform them where it's being delivered. Your receiver will need to provide photo ID when collecting their Money Order.

The Express Money Order one-hour service is available during post office hours only.

How to avoid counterfeit Money Orders (pdf 75kb)

1 Similar to cheques, Money Orders are subject to a clearance period when paid into a bank account.

2 Payments on demand may not be available at small Australia Post retail outlets or for large numbers of Money Orders.

Australia Post reserves the right to refuse to issue a Money Order for any reason including, but not limited to, the likelihood of insufficient cash being available to pay out an Express Money Order at the office of payment. Money Orders that are out-of-date, cancelled, already paid, stolen, defaced or altered in any way will not be accepted for payment. Australia Post reserves the right to delay payments for a short period while Money Orders are verified. Payees are required to provide satisfactory identification where the Money Order value exceeds $20.00.

Acceptable forms of photo identification are:

  • Australian Passport
  • International Passport (required in English)
  • Australian Driver's Licence or Learner's Permit
  • International Driver's Licence (required in English)
  • Government issued photo ID
  • Australian Proof of Age Card
  • Credit Cards
  • Bank account access or key card; and
  • Pension or benefits card with signature
