Renew your Australian passport

You can apply for a passport renewal if you have an Australian adult passport that was valid for at least 2 years, is still current (or expired within the last 24 months), and is issued in your current name, date of birth and sex.

However, if any of the following apply you will need to apply for a new passport:

  • You're applying for your first adult passport (even if you already had a child passport)
  • You're applying for a child passport and the previous passport has expired
  • Your passport expired more than 24 months ago
  • Your passport has been lost or stolen
  • You've changed your name

How it works

Find your nearest outlet

Renew your Australian passport at more than 1,700 Australia Post retail outlets around Australia.

Book your interview

As part of your application process you'll need to attend an interview at a participating Australia Post retail outlet. You can book a passport interview online via the post office locator, call us on 13 POST (13 7678), or ask at any Australia Post retail outlet.

Complete your application

You can complete the renewal form online through the Australian Passport Office. You will then need to print a copy and bring it with you to your passport interview.

If you prefer, the Australian Passport Office can mail you a hard copy of the renewal form. Phone the Australian Passport Information Service on 13 12 32 to request this.

Passport renewal forms are not available from Australia Post.

If you complete your form by hand, make sure you use black ink.

Take your photo

Your retail outlet can also take passport-quality photographs for you during your passport interview.

At your interview

Bring your completed application form, two new colour passport photographs that meet the Australia Passport Office's photograph guidelines and your current passport, as well as the application fee.

We'll check your documentation is correct and verify your identity before we send your application on to the Australian Passport Office. The interview should only take about 5 minutes.

Pay your application fee

You'll need to pay your passport fee once your application is accepted at your passport interview. You can make your payment by cash, MasterCard or Visa, or EFTPOS.

  • How long will my application take?

The Australia Passport Office is committed to issuing passports within 10 working days of receiving all the correct information and documents. You can avoid any delays by making sure you give us all the required documents at your interview.

This does not include the time we need to forward your application to the Australia Passport Office, or for your passport to be sent back to you by Registered Post. This can add between 2 and 10 working days to the timeframe, depending on whether you lodge your application in a metropolitan or rural area.

  • What if I need my passport sooner?

You can apply directly to the Australian Passport Office for a Priority Processing Service, with a turnaround time of two working days once all documentation is received. An additional fee will apply.

  • Can I track my application?

We'll give you a receipt at the end of your interview which you can use to check the progress of your application online with the Australian Passport Office.

  • What if I'm already overseas?

Contact your nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission to find out how to apply for a new Australian passport.
