What should I do if I have an accident?

Be prepared and stay safe

Car accidents are always unexpected, so it's important to remember exactly what you need to do at a time that can be stressful.

Plan ahead

It's worth keeping the following with you when you drive:

  • The phone number for your car insurance claims department
  • Paper and a pen to write down details
  • A camera (or your mobile phone camera) in case you need to take photos of the scene, any damage, or a licence plate.

If you have an accident

  1. Move yourself and any passengers to a safe place, especially if you're on a busy road.
  2. Call 000 if anyone has been hurt, if the road is blocked, or if the other party refuses to stop or exchange details.
  3. If safe to do so, take photos of the accident scene.
  4. Write down the following details about the other party or parties involved:
    • Name
    • Phone number
    • Vehicle registration
    • Address
    • License number
    • Insurance details
    • Statement of what happened
    If there are any witnesses, ask for their name and phone number as well.
  5. Call your insurance company claims department. They'll help you with getting a tow truck if you car cannot be driven, find alternative transport so you can get home safely, and start the claims process so you can be back on the road quickly.
