Apply for a new Australian passport

We can help you make sure your passport application and photos meet Australian Government requirements. Please note, Australian passports are only issued to Australian citizens, and are valid 10 years for adults and 5 years for children.

How it works

Find your nearest outlet

Apply for an Australian passport at more than 1,700 Australia Post retail outlets around Australia.

Book your interview

As part of your application process you'll need to attend an interview at a participating Australia Post retail outlet. You can book a passport interview online via the post office locator, call us on 13 POST (13 7678), or ask at any Australia Post retail outlet.

Complete your application

You can pick up a new passport application form for an adult or child passport from any Australia Post retail outlet that processes passports, or complete it online through the Australian Passport Office and then bring a printed copy to your interview.

Take your photo

Your retail outlet can take passport-quality photographs for you. You'll need to have one photo endorsed and signed by a guarantor (someone who can verify who you are - please check the Australian Passport Office for guidelines on who can be your guarantor). - so please organise this before your interview.

At your interview

Bring your completed application form, two new colour passport photographs (one signed by your guarantor) that meet the Australia Passport Office's photograph guidelines and your identification documents (such as birth certificate), as well as the application fee.

We'll check your documentation is correct and verify your identity before we send your application on to the Australian Passport Office. The interview should only take about 5 minutes.

Pay your application fee

You'll need to pay your passport fee once your application is accepted at your passport interview. You can make your payment by cash, MasterCard or Visa, or EFTPOS.

  • How long will my application take?

The Australia Passport Office is committed to issuing passports within 10 working days of receiving all the correct information and documents. You can avoid any delays by making sure you give us all the required documents at your interview.

This does not include the time we need to forward your application to the Australia Passport Office, or for your passport to be sent back to you by Registered Post. This can add between 2 and 10 working days to the timeframe, depending on whether you lodge your application in a metropolitan or rural area.

  • What if I need my passport sooner?

You can apply directly to the Australian Passport Office for a Priority Processing Service, with a turnaround time of two working days once all documentation is received. An additional fee will apply.

  • Can I track my application?

We'll give you a receipt at the end of your interview which you can use to check the progress of your application online with the Australian Passport Office.

  • What if I'm already overseas?

Contact your nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission to find out how to apply for a new Australian passport.
