Applications and renewals
Applying for a post office box, private bag & Mail2Day
You can apply and pay for a post office box, private bag or Mail2Day® in five easy steps, using the same form and process:
1. Choose a location
For a post office box, use Post Office Locator:
- to find outlets in your area offering post office boxes
- to check whether post office boxes are currently available at your preferred outlet.
If your preferred outlet doesn't have any vacant boxes, we can place you on a waiting list. Or we can help you choose a post office box at another location.
To check whether your preferred Australia Post retail outlet offers jumbo or A4 post office boxes, private bags or the Mail2day alerting service please call 13 POST (13 7678) or ask at the counter.
2. You can reserve a vacant post office box for up to 5 working days by calling 13 POST (13 7678). You'll have five working days to make your payment before your reservation expires.
3. Fill in the application form
The same application form is used for post office boxes, private bags and the Mail2Day alerting service. You can download the post office box, private bag and Mail2Day application form or you can pick one up at your local Australia Post retail outlet.
4. Lease your post office box, private bag or Mail2Day
Take the following to your Australia Post retail outlet:
- your completed application form
- proof of identity that verifies your name, residential address and signature. You can show us a drivers licence or provide two other forms of documentation. These could include your passport, a concession card, paid utilities accounts, bank statements or your rates notice.
5. Pay your fee
You'll be asked to pay the fees for your post office box, private bag or Mail2Day alerting service when you give us your application form.
All post office boxes, private bags and Mail2Day services are leased on an annual basis. Fees are calculated on an annual service year of 1 April to 31 March. When you first lease your service, you'll only be asked to pay the amount from the first month of your lease until 31 March. After that, the annual fee will apply.
You can pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or Australia Post charge account at your Australia Post retail outlet. If we've reserved a post office box or private bag for you, you'll have five working days to make your payment before your reservation expires.
You'll receive your new post office box or private bag address once your payment has been processed. If you're leasing a post office box, this is when you'll receive your keys. You'll receive two keys when you first lease your post office box and you can purchase extra keys at any time.
Terms and conditions apply to post office boxes, private bags and Mail2Day.
Renewing a post office box, private bag & Mail2Day
All post office boxes, private bags and Mail2Day® alerting services are leased on an annual service year that expires on 31 March.
Your post office box, private bag or Mail2Day service will remain active unless:
- you tell us you'd like to cancel the service
- you don't pay your renewal fee, or
- Australia Post cancels your service because you are in breach of our Post Office Box, Locked Bay and Mail2Day terms and conditions.
Your renewal is payable by 31 March of each year. If you have a charge account with us, we can save you time by arranging to automatically debit your annual renewal amount each February. Otherwise, we'll send you a renewal invoice in February each year.
You can pay your renewal:
- in person at an Australia Post retail outlet
- by mail with a cheque or credit card
- over the internet at the Postbillpay website from 10 February until 31 March (you'll need a credit card for this payment option)

- using an Australia Post charge account.
