Proof of identity
To safeguard your mail, Australia Post will need to verify your identity before we can process your application for mail redirection or mail hold.
Acceptable forms of identification vary depending on the type of customer and how you are submitting your application.
Mail redirection and mail hold:

There are also additional proof of identity requirements if submitting a mail redirection or mail hold application on behalf of another person.
Business or organisation
Applications being made on behalf of a business or organisation must be lodged at an Australia Post retail outlet by an authorised person, such as a managing partner, company secretary, trustee or other agent. You are not able to apply for a business redirection or hold online.
The following proof of ID is required:
- Written authorisation that the agent has the authority to act on behalf of the business or organisation. The authorisation must be on official letterhead and include the full name and residential address of the agent. It must be signed by an authorised person of the business or organisation.
- Proof of identity of the person lodging the application, as per the requirements for a individual applying in-store.
- Where applicable, an original or certified copy of the Business Registration Certificate.
- For a club or association, a certified copy of the minutes of the Annual General Meeting appointing the office-holders.
- For a company or company trustee, the company seal must be applied to the application next to the signature.

Individual applying in-store
The following forms of ID are accepted when applying at Australia Post retail outlets:
- Photo ID such as a driver's licence or passport (student cards and credit cards are not accepted)
OR - One of each of the following:
- a document with your name and address, such as a bank statement, rates notice or residential lease, and
- a document that shows your signature, such as a student card or Statutory Declaration.
Self-managed superannuation funds
Applications for mail redirection being made on behalf of a self-managed superannuation fund must be lodged in an Australia Post retail outlet. You are not able to apply for a business redirection or hold online.
The following proof of ID is required:
- a letter of ABN registration from the Australian Taxation Office.
Deceased estate
Applications for mail redirection being made on behalf of a deceased estate must be lodged at an Australia Post retail outlet. You cannot apply online.
The following proof of ID is required:
- a copy of the grant of probate or letter of administration showing that the person lodging the application is an executor or administrator of the estate, or a family member if no executor or administrator has been appointed.
- Proof of identity of the person lodging the application, as per the requirements for a private individual applying in-store.
Applying for other people
You can only include other people in a mail redirection application, or apply on their behalf, if you have their authority to do so. Australia Post may ask you to provide written evidence that you have such authority.
You may only apply on behalf of a child under the age of 18 if you are the parent or guardian of that child with whom the child normally resides.
It is a criminal offence to redirect another person's mail without authority. Giving false or misleading information is also a serious offence.
