PreSort Letters

Australia Post's PreSort Letters service offers discounted postage rates for customers lodging more than 300 machine-addressed articles that are barcoded and sorted. This service is the most cost effective way to send fully addressed mail.

By barcoding and sorting your articles we can more efficiently process your mail resulting in reduced costs which we pass onto you in the form of a reduced postage rate.

Benefits of PreSort Letters

By having your mail barcoded and sorted you will:

  • save money with our discounted postage rates.

Charities using PreSort Letters service are entitled to further discounts using our Charity Mail service.

Paying for PreSort Letters

Payment can be made either by using your Australia Post business credit account, a postage meter, cash, debit card or credit card.

How to get started

  1. If you are using PreSort Letters for the first time, begin by completing a PreSort Letters application form (pdf 68kb). On approval, you can commence lodging PreSort Letters at your designated approved lodgement facility.*
  2. You or your mail house needs to prepare your PreSort Letters. Visit our list of Bulk Mail Partners if you would like to find a mail house to help prepare your PreSort Letters.
If you are unsure whether your mail meets the service requirements for addressing, send us a sample of your letter. We'll test for barcode accuracy and readability. Send your letter sample to:
          Barcode Quality Program
          Australia Post
          GPO Box 1777
          Melbourne VIC 3001
Alternatively you can email it to us at bqp.help@auspost.com.au. We will provide our recommendations to you within three working days.
  3. Lodge your PreSort Letters. Part of this process is to complete the PreSort Letters lodgement document (pdf 69kb) or metered lodgement document (pdf 69kb) (if paying using a postage meter) and take it together with the articles to your closest approved lodgement facility.

If you're lodging more than 2,000 articles, a PreSort Letters supporting document must also be completed. This details the number of articles and trays in each sort plan. Alternatively, your mail house may use the Electronic Lodgement Management System (eLMS) and arrange pick up of your articles.
