Samantha Stosur's triumphant win celebrated by Australia Post

Thursday, 29 September 2011

To honour Samantha Stosur's triumphant 2011 US Open win, Australia Post has produced a souvenir stamp sheet to be made available from 29 September 2011.

"Australia Post is delighted to celebrate Samantha Stosur's exciting US Open victory with this special souvenir stamp sheet," said Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour. "This is a great achievement in Australian sporting history by one of our most courageous athletes."

Samantha Stosur became the first Australian woman in 31 years to win a grand slam title, defeating American Serena Williams in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to take out the US Open in New York on 11 September 2011. The final lasted just one hour and 13 minutes.

"I'm really excited Australia Post has decided to release a souvenir stamp sheet to celebrate my US Open win. The past couple of weeks have been very exciting and I'm still coming to terms with the idea of being a Grand Slam winner. This is something I'll remember forever," said Samantha Stosur.

The last woman to win a grand slam title was Evonne Goolagong Cawley who won her second Wimbledon title in 1980. Stosur is just the second Australian woman to win the US Open women's singles title. Margaret Court won in 1973.

Born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1984, Samantha Stosur started on her tennis journey as an 8-year-old when she received a tennis racquet for Christmas. Stosur's first big break came at Australian Open 2006 when she reached the fourth round - her best singles result at a Grand Slam tournament up until that point.

The souvenir stamp sheet features 10 x 60c Southern Cross stamps with Samantha Stosur holding the US Open Cup on the stamp tab. Images of Stosur with her winner's cup and scenes from the match feature on the border of the stamp sheet.

The souvenir stamp sheet will retail for $15.95 and is available from participating Australia Post retail outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 or online at www.auspost.com.au/stamps from 29 September 2011 while stocks last.
