Opera comes to Kinglake kids

Tuesday, 17 August 2010

Children in Kinglake Ranges will be delighted by one of the world's most popular operas when Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing makes several visits to Kinglake Ranges primary schools on 17 and 18 August thanks to Opera Australia's Oz Opera, and its principal sponsor, Australia Post.

The performances build on the support that Australia Post provided during and after the 2009 Victorian bushfires, raising funds and providing special mail delivery services after the loss of three post offices.

A special performance of the kids' opera will be held for the media at 11.30am on Tuesday 17 August at Kinglake Primary School, McMahons Road, where children from Kinglake, Toolangi and Chum Creek Primary Schools will be in attendance.

Sid the Serpent is about a dancing circus snake, who desperately wants to sing. Wherever the circus travels, Sid tries to learn a different style of singing with hilarious results.

Adrian Collette, CEO of Opera Australia, said, "It's of paramount importance that we reach out to communities and audiences as widely as possible, to bring the magic of live performance. Oz Opera is all about engaging and uplifting people through music, wherever that takes us."

Principal sponsor of Oz Opera, Australia Post, sees the performances as a way to further support bushfire-affected communities as they regenerate.

Following the 2009 bushfires, when the Kinglake West Licensed Post Office and two other regional post offices were lost to fire, Australia Post made a $1 million donation and also used 4,000 post offices Australia-wide as donation outlets, raising more than $4.8 million.

"Australia Post was just one of many organisations and individuals who helped the community during a dark moment in Victoria's history," said Australia Post Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Fahour.

"It's brighter times now, and we're delighted to be able to use our partnership with Opera Australia's Oz Opera to bring this joyful performance to kids in Kinglake Ranges," he said.
