Men's 470 sailing team latest athletes to appear on Olympic Gold Medallist stamp13 August 2012
Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page are Australia's latest Olympic gold medallist athletes to feature on a stamp after winning our third Sailing gold medal in London, this time in the Men's 470 Class.
Stamps featuring Belcher and Page will be available in participating Australia Post retail outlets from today.
The duo began with a four-point advantage and took control of the race from the beginning, keeping their British rivals at bay to win gold and assert Australia as one the world's dominant sailing nations. The British team claimed the silver, followed by the Argentineans in third. It was a monumental win for Page, who admitted that he had contemplated retirement after the Beijing Olympic Games.
The duo will join fellow Olympians Tate Smith, David Smith, Murray Stewart, Jacob Clear, Nathan Outteridge, Iain Jensen, Sally Pearson, Anna Meares, Tom Slingsby, Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger as fourteenth and fifteenth Australian athletes from the London 2012 Olympic Games to have their images featured on a stamp through the Australian Gold Medallists stamps program.
Australia Post is producing stamps for every Australian gold medallist from the London 2012 Olympic Games, and they are expected to be available in participating Australia Post retail outlets within 48 hours of each gold medal presentation.
"Our first Gold Medallist stamp for the 2012 London Olympics featured the women's 4 x 100 freestyle relay team, and the positive response was fantastic. We are hoping that fans are just as excited to see Page and Belcher on a stamp," said Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour.
"This program recognises the hard work and success of our athletes. It also provides the public with an exciting opportunity to collect their own memento of the London 2012 Olympic Games," he added.
The Australian Gold Medallists Stamps are part of Australia Post's continuing support of the Australian Olympic Team and are available while stocks last. Australia Post has already released The Road to London stamp on 5 June, and three commemorative sport stamps on 17 July celebrating Australia's proud tradition at the Olympics in swimming, rowing and pole vault.
