Commonwealth heritage list
The Australia Post Commonwealth Heritage List is an inventory of heritage places or properties, or groups of places, in Commonwealth lands and waters that are managed or owned by the Australian Government. The list incorporates natural and cultural heritage places, including places connected to defence, communications, customs and other government activities that reflect Australia's development as a nation.
Places on the list have been identified by Australia Post and are currently being reviewed by the Federal Minister for the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts for Commonwealth heritage values and are accordingly protected under the EPBC Act.
Commonwealth heritage values derive from aesthetic, historic, scientific or social significance or other special value for future generations as well as for the present community.
In 2007-08, all owned properties (approximately 500) were assessed for heritage value with 157 of these properties being physically inspected. The assessment and identification of properties that exhibit Commonwealth heritage values has been completed and sent to DEWHA for review. This process is a key undertaking of Australia Post's heritage strategy.
