Climate change
Australia Post is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. We have demonstrated this commitment through our voluntary participation in the Greenhouse Challenge since 1997 and over the past decade, our emissions reduction program has saved approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO2-e (carbon dioxide equivalent).
Our current and historical greenhouse gas emission levels can be viewed in our Greenhouse Challenge and Annual Reports (for reporting purposes, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER) has superseded the Greenhouse Challenge program).
Programs
Resources are being dedicated to specific programs to identify and implement opportunities to reduce our emissions. Current environmental programs focus on the following key areas:
Reporting
To date, we have been reporting on the following greenhouse gas emissions:
- Scope 1 - emissions that derive directly from our operational activities and comprise the fuel used by our fleet and the gas used at facilities.
- Scope 2 - emissions that indirectly derive from our operational activities and comprise electricity use.
- Scope 3 - emissions that indirectly derive from our operational activities, occur outside our boundary and are outside of our control, comprising waste.
The importance of climate change is such that we are extending our measurement and reporting. We are now measuring additional scope 3 emissions, including the fuel used by our contractors and electricity used by licensees and franchisees. This ensures we understand the full impact of our business, and can influence a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain.
