Biodiversity
Australia Post recognises that we have a responsibility to ensure our operational activities do not negatively impact on biodiversity in the areas where we operate. Although the vast majority of our facilities are located in urban areas and pose little or no threat to biodiversity, we do operate facilities in some areas close to nature.
Protecting endangered species
We undertook a comprehensive program to assess whether our facilities might have an adverse impact on local endangered species.
Three endangered species were identified on or near land owned by Australia Post:
- Growling Grass Frog
- Dwarf Galaxias (a fish)
- Acacia Pubescence (a small wattle tree)
The audit found that our activities are not having a negative impact on these species.
In addition, in collaboration with Melbourne Water, we funded the establishment of the Hallam Valley Retarding Basin Wetlands at the Dandenong Letters Centre in Melbourne.
Wetlands occur in the natural environment and are made up of a range of ponds and vegetation, which capture stormwater and filter it before it flows out to creeks, rivers and oceans. They are effective in removing suspended sediments, nitrogen, phosphorous and heavy metals.
The Hallam Valley Retarding Basin Wetland is managed by Melbourne Water and has resulted in cleaner, naturally filtered water flowing through to Port Phillip Bay and south-eastern beaches. Dwarf Glaxias are known to exist in Hallam and surrounds, and the wetland is removing approximately 3.9 tonnes of nitrogen from stormwater annually.
WWF of Nature stamp issue
The WWF Conservation Stamp Collection is one of the world's largest thematic stamp collections and is aimed at promoting wildlife conservation. More than 165 countries are involved in the project and up to 16 stamp sets have been issued.
The species depicted on WWF stamps are typically at risk of extinction in the country of issue. Australia Post released the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) Royal Penguin (WWF) stamp in August 2007 as part of the official collection.
