Australia Post celebrates 100 years of International Women's Day
Monday, 07 March 2011
A program that encourages women to move into non-traditional areas of work such as truck-driving and the release of a commemorative stamp are just two of the ways that Australia Post is marking the centenary of International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March.
As part of Australia Post's diversity strategy, Australia Post has been running a Victorian-based '"Women in Trucks'" program that encourages women to move into non-traditional areas of employment. Since the Women in Trucks program commenced in 2008, the number of female truck drivers has increased from one 1 to 16.
"Equal treatment of women and men is not just the right thing to do - it is also good for business," Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour said.
"Encouraging the full participation of women in our workplaces, and in the community, makes good sense because it leads to a greater diversity of opinion and improvements in our collective decision- making."
Australia Post has also launched a commemorative stamp to celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day.
"The stamp is an indelible channel through which we can promote positive change and raise awareness of the issues women face in their everyday lives," Mr Fahour said.
As an Amethyst partner of UN Women, Australia Post will be selling fundraising merchandise through its corporate retail outlets around the country, and is hosting a series of events and activities around the country to celebrate 100 years of International Women's Day, including localised fundraising morning teas at facilities and a major staff event in Melbourne.
Australia Post staff will also be participating in a clothing drive for Fitted For Work, a volunteer organisation which helps long-term unemployed and disadvantaged women obtain work and assists by providing them with corporate attire.
