Queensland's Anna Meares latest athlete to appear on Olympic Gold Medallist stamp08 August 2012
After winning an Olympic gold medal in the women's cycle sprint at the London 2012 Olympic Games, her second Olympic gold medal, Queensland's Anna Meares has become the latest Australian athlete to feature on a stamp.
Stamps featuring Meares will be available in participating Australia Post retail outlets from Friday 10 August while stocks last.
Originally from Blacktown in Queensland, 28-year-old Meares defeated race favourite Victoria Pendleton from Great Britain for the gold in the women's cycling sprint, one better than her silver in Beijing in the same event. A strategic move by Meares saw her take control of the race and cross the finish line well clear of Pendleton in the biggest win of her career.
Meares joins fellow Olympians Tom Slingsby, Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger as the sixth Australian athlete from the 2012 Olympic Games to have their image featured on a stamp through the Australian Gold Medallists stamp program.
Australia Post is producing stamps for every Australian gold medallist from the London 2012 Olympic Games. The stamps are expected to be available in participating Australia Post retail outlets within 48 hours of each gold medal presentation.
"Our first Gold Medallist stamp for the 2012 London Olympics featured the women's 4 x 100 freestyle relay team, and the positive response was fantastic. We are hoping that fans are just as excited to see Anna on a stamp," said Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour.
"This program recognises the hard work and success of our athletes. It also provides the public with an exciting opportunity to collect their own memento of the 2012 Olympic Games," he added.
The Australian Gold Medallists stamps are part of Australia Post's continuing support of the Australian Olympic Team and are available through participating Australia Post retail outlets while stocks last. Australia Post has already released The Road to London stamp on 5 June, and three commemorative sport stamps on 17 July celebrating Australia's proud tradition at the Olympics in swimming, rowing and pole vault.
